WHAT PEOPLE SAY
William Chan
Dance Journal/hk
Kenny Leung appears in white raincoat with plastic wrap round his face, an obvious image adopted from Umbrella Movement protesters. With audio recordings of tear gas firing sampled during that time, and a small controlled lit space, Leung successfully illustrates a person battling with himself as well as with a power from the top.

Among all the works in this year's CDS Programme 3, my most favorite is Kenny Leung's The Lament of the Wind in respond to the turbulent world Hong Kong now faces through sound, costume, lighting and smoke effects. The content is complex, and emotions and ideas are well-thought!
“A bang, and smoke everywhere.
A silhouette of the wind in wisps of smoke,
Yet the wind isn’t smiling as usual,
But bitterly sighing.”
In what’s absurd and twisted, nothing is within our control. What is freedom in this in-betweenness?
Commissioned by the Hong Kong Arts Festival, The Lament of the Wind is a solo dance piece in respond to the Umbrella Movement in 2015. Wearing a rain coat with his eyes covered, the performer struggles under the pressure of the light and smoke, vivdly portraying the reality of resistance movement.
