Kenny Leung (Leung Kim-fung) is a Hong Kong contemporary dance artist, choreographer, and dance tutor, and the Artistic Director of Common Ground. With over two decades of experience in dance and theatre, he graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (Dance; major in Chinese Dance, minor in Choreography), and obtained an MFA in Dance (Contemporary Dance Performance) from Taipei National University of the Arts. He has worked in Taiwan with professional dance companies and theatre groups as a performer and creator, and has collaborated in works by Hong Kong and international choreographers, touring across Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Rooted in the refined techniques of Chinese classical dance and Chinese ethnic/folk dance, and shaped by the open training of Taiwan’s contemporary dance scene, his movement language forms a distinctive style that moves between tradition and the contemporary, East and West. For Leung, dance is not merely performance but a way of “writing” memory, culture, and urban experience into the body. His practice is grounded in long-term embodied research, with a focus on movement vocabulary, urban memory, and cultural identity, while continuously exploring possibilities of viewing and presence in the theatre.

One of his key creative trajectories is the “Body Codes” series, which regards the body as a vessel of memory and culture. By bringing an exhibition-based mode of viewing into the theatre, he invites audiences not only to watch from their seats, but to recompose their perceptions and interpretations across space and fragments. Body Codes II: Performscape reconfigures the performer–audience relationship through an “exhibition-theatre” format and was nominated for the Hong Kong Dance Awards.

Another trajectory is the “Battle” series, He was commissioned by the West Kowloon Cultural District (Hong Kong) to create The BATTLE, Introducing the improvisation, rules, and dialogic nature of street-dance battles into the theatre, he proposes the concept of “Non-Genre Battle”, bringing performers from diverse backgrounds into a shared arena of encounter and exchange. Here, dance is no longer defined by a single genre, but becomes a conversation about the body, perspectives, and the sensibility of the time.

His full-length dance-theatre work Imagined Altar draws on folk dances from around the world and continues his exhibition-theatre approach, responding to how disappearing cultures and embodied memories may be carried forward. In 2025, the work received the Hong Kong Dance Awards – Outstanding Dance Production in a Small Venue. In addition, he was selected as an awardee of the West Kowloon Creative Incubation Programme in 2024. Starting from his identity as a descendant of the Aberdeen boat-dwelling community, he conducted place-based research and created the outdoor, immersive interactive performance Anchored in Memory, themed around Aberdeen’s boat people culture and oral histories, weaving together dance, live music, sound installation, and text-based pathways to reflect on local culture and its transmission.

In terms of public engagement and community connection, he was commissioned by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) of the Hong Kong Government to create Juggling Wonders, a Community Cultural Ambassador Programme touring production across Hong Kong’s 18 districts (16 performances). Framed by a martial-arts tale, the work blends juggling, theatre, and dance, transforming traditional street arts—such as crystal ball manipulation and diabolo—into a contemporary stage vocabulary. Through lightness and humour, it allows audiences to experience the contemporary vitality of folk practices while conveying a spirit of collaboration and solidarity, and builds a shared, breathing live experience with the community through real-time interaction during the tour.

Across disciplines, Leung has also served as choreographer and movement director for documentary theatre and cross-media productions, collaborating with creative teams in lighting, sound, and new media, and continuing to expand the possibilities of dance within contemporary art and public space.
