Hong Kong independent choreographer, dancer, dance tutor, movement coach, and founding leader of Common Ground. Kenny Leung first studied Chinese dance at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and holds a Master’s degree in contemporary dance performance from the Taipei National University of the Arts. While in Taiwan, he joined Meimage Dance and Paper Windmill Theatre as a professional dancer. Upon returning to Hong Kong, he has worked and toured extensively with numerous renowned choreographers and dance companies, such as Victor Fung, Chang Xiaoni, and Tian Gebing. Fusing both Chinese and Western dance vocabulary, training and experience, Kenny develops a unique style with a strength in improvisation and diverse physical performance.
With a focus on the physical movements and cross-media experiment, Kenny’s work explores the relationship between performing and viewing, and the infinite possibilities of performance itself. His recent cross-disciplinary works include “The Battle”, a non-genre and impromptu contest between dancers and actors in 2020, “Body Codes II: Performscape”, an immersive exhibition/ theatre in collaboration with a museum curator in 2021, and “Together in Search of Light” in which he choreographed and coached movements for Pants Theatre. This year he is working with local lighting artist and sound artist to intervene art installation and music with dance respectively.
Kenny has been commissioned by various local and overseas units, including Hong Kong Arts Festival, West Kowloon Cultural District, Taiwan 8213 Physical Dance Theatre, and Malaysia Damansara Performing Arts Centre. His commissioned works include "Nocturne", "Room 10279", “O”, “The Lament of the Wind”, “The Battle Zone”, “Kala”, “I Don’t Belong Here”, etc.
